I am delighted to be the newest addition to the Open Data team at NASA. And here’s why. I am a devoted consumer of NASA data. I use NASA’s open data regularly, especially the MODIS and Landsat data. These are the primary data sets behind my previous project, Global Forest Watch, which just won the UN Big Data Climate Challenge.
Someone at NASA deserves credit for this win. The GFW initiative would never have been possible without the forward-thinking NASA scientists that opened up the MODIS and Landsat archives. The Open Data team is continuing this work, with over 3,500 data sets already listed and open on data.gov. The number of open data sets continues to rise. The number of unforeseen, external applications that use the open data sets is rising exponentially. Thanks, NASA! It’s a pleasure to meet you in person.
