An iOS App that provides high-energy astronomers information about high-energy transient objects which have recently been brightening.

The Challenge: Transient Watch – Daily News on Active Neutron Stars and Black Holes on Your Mobile Phone

Develop a mobile phone app to provide interested astronomers with ‘daily news’ on the transient high-energy sky, based on information available from public pages at NASA, the European Space Agency, the Japanese Space Agency, etc.

By pushing express news about the brightening of high-energy objects, we aim to speed up high-energy astronomer’s research and to enlighten many fans of astronomy about activity in space that involves high-energy bands.

Our system is composed of three main components:

  • Batch system: which scrapes Swift/Fermi/MAXI Web sites, collects light curve data about transient objects, analyzes them, and derives several candidate objects which show symptoms of increasing brightness
  • API back-end: which returns the lightcurves from our database in response to the request from the App's front-end
  • iOS front-end App: which notifies you about brightening objects and shows their information such as lightcurves
